People
sometimes say there's a health and fitness "craze"
in the United States.
Americans are interested in getting and
staying in good shape. All across the country,
young people and old are exercising, jogging,
riding bicycles and working out at health clubs,
trying to keep in shape and stay healthy.
People
know that exercise and a good diet will help
them live longer and happier lives. In addition
to exercising, Americans are also eating less
salt and sugar and drinking less coffee and
tea.
Jane Fonda is a well-known American actress.
Because of her books, cassettes and videotapes,
now she is also a well-known exercise and fitness
expert.
Ms. Fonda first became interested in a healthy
diet in 1967 when she was pregnant with her
first child. She became interested in exercising
in 1977 when she broke her foot making a movie.
In
1979 she opened her own fitness center, Jane
Fonda's Workout, in Beverly Hills, California.
In time, she opened others.
Her
exercise program was so popular she decided
to write about it. The book, Jane Fonda's Workout,
sold more than two million copies in its first
five years. The accompanying video is the number
one seller in video history.
